Kiandra to Lake Eucumbene

Every angler who has fished the Snowies for long has a Denison story, and half of them are about a fish that was too big for the water it was in. This is the Eucumbene everyone means: the fifteen kilometres from the highway bridge at Kiandra down to the lake, the run water, and the stretch that made the river famous.

The shape of it runs in three parts. Below the bridge the river drops into a boulder gorge you could lose a week in. It comes out into runs and pools in open country at Denison, the easiest place to get in. Then it stretches into long clear glides across the flats to Providence Portal and the lake, where the river's only gauge sits with a record back to 1956.

The resident browns and rainbows are the summer fishery, and they are the trip to plan first. From Christmas to April the river is low enough to wade, warm enough for the hoppers, and wide enough to spread out, with almost nobody on it. A dry-dropper through the gorge pockets, a hopper tight to the grassy banks at Denison in the afternoon, an Elk Hair Caddis in the evening riffles.

The lake browns are the autumn fishery, and they are the story. From late April fish of a size you do not associate with a river you can wade nose up through the glides below Providence and into the pools at Denison, ignoring most of what you throw at them and then taking a nymph swung across a tail-out on the fourth pass. It is hard, cold, sometimes crowded fishing for a few weeks, and the rules change under your feet: this is fly-and-lure-only spawning-stream water, from the first of May the take drops to one fish and it must be a big one, and after the June long weekend the river is closed until October.

Read the river's year drawn from the Providence gauge before you drive. The melt holds it high and cold into November. When the latest reading sits in the shaded wadeable band, the runs and glides are yours; above it, fish the edges and wait. Come for the run if you must. Come back in February and see what you missed.

Water and habitat

Below the highway bridge at Kiandra the river leaves its plain and drops into a boulder gorge. The fall of the river on the whole-river page shows the break clearly: the steepest water on the stretch, bedrock and boulders, pockets and plunge pools. Four Mile Trail reaches the river just above it and Flying Fox, on the Alpine Sawmill Trail, just below. The bank survey draws the gorge as the most heavily timbered water above the lake.

The gorge lets go around Denison and the river becomes what most people picture: runs and pools in open country with timber on the banks, then long glides and riffles that carry it out across the flats to Providence Portal. Those flats are lake bed when the storage is full and river when it is not, so how much water there is to fish at the bottom end depends on the lake level in a given year. The gauge sits here, at Providence, and has since the 1950s.

Fish and forage

Brown trout and rainbow trout. The resident fish are the summer fishery. The lake fish are the autumn one, and the difference in size between the two is the story of this river. Nothing is stocked here: the river feeds the lake and the lake feeds the river, and that is the whole arrangement.

Caddis and mayfly in the runs, a tungsten nymph's worth of larvae under every rock in the gorge, and from late December the hoppers. Once the grasshoppers are up on the flats around Denison and Providence a fish holding tight to a grassy bank in the afternoon is waiting for one, and you can watch them come to it.

When to fish it

Read the river's year drawn on this page before you decide. The melt holds the gauge high and cold through spring and into November, and while nymphing will take fish then it is hard, cold work. From late spring the fish start to look up. From Christmas until the frosts the river is at its best: low enough to wade, warm enough for the hoppers, and wide enough to spread out.

Then the run. It builds through April and the water gets colder every week, and the rules change under your feet. From the first of May the spawning-stream rule cuts the take to a single fish of a size most anglers will never see, and from the Tuesday after the June long weekend the river is closed until the October long weekend. Fish the run knowing that; the fish are there to spawn, and the whole point of the rule is that most of them get to.

Match the dot on the chart to the shading. In the wadeable band the runs and glides are yours. Above it, fish the soft edges from the bank and wait for it to drop.

How to fish it

Two rivers, two approaches. In the gorge, a four or five weight and a dry-dropper: a big buoyant dry, a Stimulator or a Royal Humpy, with a tungsten Pheasant Tail or Hare's Ear a couple of feet under it. Fish every pocket as if it holds a trout, because most do, and fish it once. The first drift is the one that counts in water this fast; the second is for the fish that did not see the first.

From Denison down, slow it right down. In summer, walk the glides and look before you cast. An Adams fished parachute-style or a Klinkhammer for the fish that are rising, a hopper for the ones tight under the bank in the afternoon, an Elk Hair Caddis in the evening riffles. Long leaders, fine tippet, careful wading. These glides are clear and the fish are resident and they have seen it all.

In the run, the fish are not feeding so much as reacting. Heavier nymphs, swung and dead-drifted through the tail-outs and the deeper runs, a Woolly Bugger across the pools at first light. It is patient work in cold water among other anglers, and manners matter: give a run its space, and when you have moved a fish, let the next person have the pool.

Access and safety

Kiandra Bridge is the top of the stretch and Suicide Hole car park sits just below it, which is the kind of name you take at its word. Four Mile Trail drops in above the gorge. Flying Fox, on the Alpine Sawmill Trail, is a walk in below it, named for the wire that once crossed the river there. Denison campground on the lake side gives you the runs and pools and the flats, and the Providence end comes off the lake tracks. NSW DPIRD's inspected access sites along the river are pinned on the whole-river page; a pin is a place the authority checked, not a promise about the gate.

All of it is Kosciuszko National Park. The gorge is the serious ground: slick rock, deep pockets, and a long way out if you turn an ankle. Wade it with a staff and do not wade it alone. On the flats the danger is the weather, which turns fast at this height. In the run season, ice on the rocks at dawn is normal.

Regulations

NSW DPIRD classifies the whole Eucumbene above the dam wall of Lake Eucumbene, this stretch included, its creeks and tributaries and Providence Portal, as artificial fly and lure water and as a trout spawning stream. Fly or lure only, on one rod, all season. A small daily bag through the open season. From the first of May, one fish a day and it must be over fifty centimetres. From the Tuesday after the June long weekend until the Friday before the October long weekend, closed.

Along the river itself about 64% of the bank is under trees, 33% is native grass or heath and 3% is farmed. The most wooded stretch is 80 to 85 km from the source; the most open is 5 to 10 km. When do the lake browns run?

Autumn into early winter, building through April and May. The rules tighten with them: from the start of May the take is one fish and it must be a big one, and the river closes after the June long weekend. The exact days follow the public holidays and live in the NSW closure notice, not here.

Where is the gauge and what should it read?

At Providence, just above the lake. The river's year is drawn on this page from its whole record, with the wadeable band shaded across it and the latest reading placed on it as a dot. If the dot sits in the band the river is in order for the glides and the runs. Above it, fish the edges and wait.

Is Denison the only way in?

No, it is the easiest. Four Mile Trail drops you in above the gorge, Flying Fox on the Alpine Sawmill Trail gets you in below it, and the Providence end is reached off the lake tracks. All of them are walks, and the gorge is the hard one.

Are there rainbows too?

Yes. The browns get the attention, but the rainbows come up in the spring water and the river holds resident fish of both through the summer.
