The Murray is the river you drive to for a Murray cod on the fly. NSW's own fishing guide says the river up and downstream of Lake Mulwala holds the same cod, golden perch, Murray crayfish, redfin and carp as the lake, and that it deserves a look when the lake is crowded over the summer school holidays.

It is a long river, so start with its shape. It runs as the border between NSW and Victoria and carries on into South Australia. Up top it drops fast out of steep high country. Below that, a chain of weirs and locks turns it into a string of slow pools. Think of it in three parts: the high country at the top, the Hume to Tocumwal stretch around Lake Mulwala, and the long lowland river below.

Start at Mulwala. The river above and below the lake is timbered cod and golden perch water, and the NSW guide points you to it over the busy summer holidays. Read the current NSW and Victorian guides for what is open on this stretch before you go.

For trout, head for the steep high country at the top of the river, which in our read fishes as trout water. Read the current NSW guide for any trout season before you plan the drive.

The lower river, below Torrumbarry and on past Robinvale and Mildura, is big slow cod and golden perch water. Fish the timber between the weirs and locks rather than the white water beneath them, and check the current guides for what applies near each wall.

Pick your third of the river, check the gauge nearest where you will stand, and read the NSW, Victorian and South Australian guides before you go.

Water and habitat

Below the high country the Murray is a lowland river held up by weirs. The water between the walls is slow and deep, and the fish sit on structure: fallen timber, undercut banks, the outside of bends where the current has scoured a hole. The gradient chart shows how quickly the river drops out of its steep upper country and then runs nearly flat for most of its length, and the bank cover chart shows how much of the river's edge is still vegetated.

In our read, cod treat a big snag in a slow pool as home, and golden perch hang around the same timber but roam more. The steep upper river is a different animal: faster, colder water with riffles and runs, where trout take the usual stations at the heads of pools and along the seams.

Fish and forage

Murray cod and golden perch are the main event. Silver perch, freshwater catfish, redfin and carp are all recorded, as are trout cod, which look a lot like a small Murray cod. Learn to tell them apart and check the current guide for their status before you keep anything. Brown and rainbow trout are recorded too, and river blackfish.

The small fish the predators eat are recorded here as well: Australian smelt, carp gudgeons, bony bream, rainbowfish and several galaxias, plus Murray crayfish. That menu tells you what to throw. A big, bulky fly that moves water suits a cod looking for a bony bream or a crayfish, and a smaller baitfish pattern suits golden perch and redfin.

NSW recreational fishing trust money has gone into tagging studies of how cod use the upper Murray, so the fish up there are being watched as well as fished.

When to fish it

Summer and early autumn are the obvious time on the lowland water. In our experience the warm months are when cod and golden perch are most active in shallow water and most willing to chase a fly, and the NSW guide suggests the river around Mulwala when the lake is busy over the summer school holidays. In our experience the edges of the day matter more than the month: first light, last light and the first hour of dark.

Winter cod fishing is slower but not dead. Fish deeper and slower and expect fewer takes. Check the current NSW and Victorian guides for any seasonal closure on your stretch before you plan a spring trip.

The flow and hydro-thermal charts come from a gauge high in the upper river, above Hume Weir. They give you the shape of the year in the high country, but they cannot show what Hume releases or how the lowland river is running. In our read, the warmer months bring terrestrials such as hoppers onto the grassy banks up there.

How to fish it

For cod, use a heavy rod (an 8 to 10 weight), a sinking or intermediate line, and a short, stout leader. Throw a big fly tight to timber and bring it back slowly, with pauses. Most takes come close to the snag, so be ready to turn the fish before it gets back in. After dark, a large surface fly worked slowly along a snag-lined bank is a good bet.

For golden perch and redfin, drop to a 6 or 7 weight and fish a smaller weighted fly, something like a Woolly Bugger in dark or olive, slowly along the same timber.

On the trout water, fish it as you would any small mountain river: nymphs under an indicator in the runs, a dry or a hopper along the banks in summer, and an approach from downstream.

Access and safety

The access card lists the NSW angler access sites and boat ramps along the river. Treat them as places to get to the water, not as permission to cross private land. Where you are not sure whose ground you are on, ask.

As on any big lowland river, snags and steep, slippery banks are the everyday hazard. Wear a life jacket in a boat, and keep well clear of the rough water right below any weir. Check the live conditions for the gauge nearest you before you go, because the level can change from one trip to the next.

Regulations

Check the current guides, including their closed-waters lists, for the stretch you plan to fish. The river borders three states, so before you fish, read the current NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Victorian Fisheries Authority and Primary Industries and Regions SA fishing guides for the stretch and the bank you will be on. That covers bag and size limits, the cod and trout seasons, and anything that applies near the weirs and locks.

487 named access sites

These authority-listed points are separate from the mapped track intersections above. Some were inspected and some are public boat-ramp records; each row says which. A listing does not grant permission across private land, so check closures, signs and gates when you arrive.

A year at a glance; check current rules

  • Cod and golden perch in the warm months · Dec to Apr In our experience the most reliable stretch of the year for natives on the fly. Big flies against timber at first and last light. Check the current NSW and Victorian guides for what is open on your stretch.
  • Hoppers on the trout water · Dec to Mar In our read, a hopper along a grassy bank in the high country is a good bet on a warm afternoon. Check the current NSW guide for any trout season before you go.
  • Winter cod, slow and deep · Jun to Aug A guide's read, not a measurement. Fewer takes and a slower fly, fished deep along the timber on a sinking line.

The river's year

Daily flow at Murray River at Bringenbrong Bridge, every year 1983 to 2026

10 20 50 100 200 typical range high-flow mark Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec m³/s
43 years of the gauge, week by week. The dark band is the middle half of all years, the pale band nine years in ten, the line the median. The shaded strip is the typical range: the band the river sits in about half of all days. In a typical year the river sits in it from late October through the turn of the year to mid June, and runs higher than that from early July to late October. Whether a given day is one to wade is a call made at the bank, not a reading off this chart. Median flow peaks in mid September and bottoms out in late December. Flow and temperature are measured at different stations; this chart shows flow only.

Read it left to right: the river runs above the flow on the left edge almost never, and above the flow on the right edge almost always. Half of all days sit below 53.1 m³/s. The shaded band is the typical range, where it sits about half the time; it runs higher than that one day in three and above the high-flow mark about one day in seven. These are frequency bands drawn from the record, not a measured limit — judge the water when you get there.

dense forest open woodland scattered trees and scrub native grass and heath farmed or cleared bare ground lake
Along the river itself about 72% of the bank is under trees, 18% is native grass or heath and 9% is farmed. The most wooded stretch is 700 to 800 km from the source; the most open is 200 to 300 km. A satellite reads the canopy, not the ground beneath it, so treat this as a read of the country, not a survey of every bank.

Capture records by decade — electrofishing, netting, trapping and rotenone surveys only; a sighting, an eDNA water sample or a stocking release is not a capture and is not counted here. A record is not an abundance estimate, and a decade with no bar is a decade with no capture survey on file, not evidence the water was empty.

Questions anglers ask

Can I fish right up to the weirs?

Check first. Read the current NSW and Victorian fishing guides for the weir you are heading to before you fish anywhere near the wall. As below any weir, the water right under it can be rough, so keep your distance from it anyway.

Where do I fish for trout?

In our experience, the steep high country at the top of the river. Read the current NSW guide for any trout season before you fish it.

Which state's rules apply?

The river is a border water shared by NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Before you fish, read the current NSW, Victorian and South Australian guides for the stretch and the bank you will be on.
